Who

Accumulate are the first art school for the homeless

Why

To provide creative learning experiences led by professional tutors for people who often feel excluded from the regular education system

What

A 10-week programme focused on routes into creative employment

ABOUT THE Project

Creative Futures was a free ten-week programme led by Accumulate, taking place at Autograph between 23rd January and 26th March 2024.

This was the third iteration of the Creative Futures programme, which seeks to break down barriers for people who are affected by homelessness to enter the creative sector, build networks and have access to opportunities.

Over the ten weeks, participants heard from a range of speakers from across the creative industries, covering everything from making money as a creative, perfecting your social media profile, portfolio and network building and growing your confidence and employability skills.

Week 2

Week two was spent exploring tools such as LinkedIn, communication skills and expectations in a work environment, and previous Creative Futures participant, Nikol DeHaan, gave a talk to this year's cohort.

Week 3

Week 3 featured Sade English, curator and founder of Anticlone Gallery, and art director Paul Rider spoke to the group about how to create and present a portfolio.

Week 4

The theme for week 4 was all things money with money and careers coach Rebecca Young.

Week 5

Featuring presentations from artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown and careers consultant Yvonne Halloran from Seeds Diversity Project.

Week 6

On learning from failure with Leah Jacobs Gordon from Design Bridge, an artist talk from Othello De'Souza Hartley and a presentation from Tate's project curator Katherine Finerty.

Week 7

Artist and illustrator Vic Lee spoke with the group about his journey as a creative followed by an afternoon of thinking about journalling and writing artist manifestos as part of a zine making workshop with Curve.

Week 8

Accumulate's Deputy Director spoke to participants about making the most of Instagram for building and sharing a creative profile, and our cohort presented elevator pitches to staff from Deutsche Bank.

Week 9

Vicky Yang and Graeme Haig from Design Bridge spoke to the group about how to ideate, producing and present creative briefs. In the afternoon, participants presented their portfolios to staff from the Jacky Winter Group, IBA - International Body of Art, Handsome Frank Illustration Agency and various creative freelancers.

Week 10

Participants took part in speed networking sessions with representatives from organisations including Adobe, Barbican, Design Bridge, JKR Global, Gem Creative Studio, Sade English at Anticlone Gallery, South London Gallery, and Accumulate. These organisations then offered participants work-related opportunities and experiences.

what participants said

It's very hard to say how could we make this course better... Changed my life.

I never knew somebody out there had answers of my questions. Thank you Accumulate.

It was truly wonderful to share 10 weeks with you all, too. When I came across your website, I thought that if they came back to me, it would be the most meaningful and beautiful gift I would ever receive in my life. When I tried my luck a little and emailed again, Marice responded immediately and accepted, and I can say that it was my happiest moment. I think it takes an incredibly big heart to touch the lives of many people, and I appreciate this initiative with all my heart.
