Masterji
"a portrait of an extended family that are bound together not through bloodlines but through the lens of Materji’s camera" - Mark Sealy
Product Description
Masterji is a Coventry original, and photography was his obsession for more than sixty years. He documented the South-Asian community in Coventry with a theatrical, playful eye that brought out the character of his customers and defined his style - revealing much about how a migrant community was keen to be portrayed.
Published when he was 95, Masterji's book celebrates Coventry’s South Asian immigrants since his own arrival from India in 1951. Ranging from intimate individual portraits to groups of friends and family, the pictures make visible an important strand of the city’s social history that has been invisible to photographic and sociological traditions.
A limited edition of only 400 copies, Masterji features an introduction by Mark Sealy and a text by the artist.
